“Legacy is Me” – 2 Cents Movement and Ministry partners

The buzzing popularity of Spoken Word Poetry is evident. The literary genre was featured prominently at the closing of this year’s NGC Bocas Lit Fest – the Caribbean’s premiere literary festival, and many young poets have been able to turn Spoken Word Poetry into viable careers, performing around the world and training younger poets over the last four years.

The Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, as an official sponsor and partner, is thrilled to be associated with The 2 Cents Movement’s 6th annual National Secondary School Spoken Word Outreach Tour (formerly known as the Bocas Speak Out Secondary School Spoken Word Tour). Once again, the 2 Cents Movement programme formed part of the 2018 National Patriotism Month schedule which commenced on August 17th and specifically targeted young persons in secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago under the themed “Legacy is Me”.

The tour aimed at inspiring National Pride in students through an hour long performance – “Legacy is Me” featuring a patriotically dressed poetry caravan armed with poems about the history of Trinidad and Tobago which will inspire students to take full ownership of the country’s future. The performance incorporates elements of theatre and music. The group also participated in the Ministry’s Youth Festival held at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts.

As part of an online campaign – three of the poems used on the Tour will be turned into three videos. A fourth video compilation of 100 hundred students saying why the legacy of the country depends on them in one sentence each will also be produced. These four videos will be posted on the Ministry’s social media platforms.

The Ministry is confident that the art form will continue to be a useful adjunct to students’ curriculum work in language, literature, and visual and performing arts. The school tour is expected to conclude on October 5th.
