Community Development Minister Re-Commissioned Three (3) Community Centres
On Tuesday 23rd, January, 2018, Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly re-commissioned three (3) community centres in the Morvant/Laventille area. These centres included Trou Macaque, Never Dirty and Chinapoo Community Centres.
Refurbishment works and upgrades were completed by the East Port of Spain Development Company Limited during the fiscal period 2016/2017. Dr. Deborah Thomas-Austin, Managing Director of East Port of Spain Development Company Limited in her remarks said, “Our company has been tasked with a large mandate to develop and re-develop East POS to improve economic, social and physical conditions”. In her address, the Managing Director indicated that East Port of Spain Development Company Limited seeks to cultivate meaningful relationships and partnership between private sector, government and communities to work in an integrated manner to deal with the challeges of East Port of Spain and her organisation is pleased with the support received from the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts in this regard.
Also addressing the audience, Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant, Mr. Adrian Leonce said that the community centres represents a space in which the community needs to utilise and take pride in what comes out of that space. He also took the opportunity to praise residents who have nurtured the talents of the young persons in the field of music within the community.
In her keynote address, Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts said, “Working together is an important aspect of community life, and this ceremony today embodies that togetherness. It embodies the fact that we have one company working to build these structures, working in the communities, partnering with other ministries to carry this vision even further”. The Minister also encouraged the three communities to participate in the programmes offered by the Ministry and reassured them that the Ministry will continue to support them.
Dr. Gadsby-Dolly also said that, “These buildings are not just buildings, they represents hopes, dreams, opportunities for interaction, opportunities for learning, opportunities to develop yourselves. And therefore, it is a pleasure always to rededicate or to dedicate one of these facilities to our communities because we know what it will bring”.
