“Colour Me Trinbago” Art Competition

‘National Patriotism Month’ is a designated period of August 17th to September 24th, in our national calendar to celebrate our pride and commitment to Trinidad and Tobago. To commemorate this observance the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts (MCDCA) with its partners, SWMCOL, NALIS, Ministries of Public Administration and Communication, National Trust the National Museum and Art Gallery, spearheads a series of cultural and educational activities to promote a call for increased social responsibility, volunteerism, and awareness of our cultural and environmental assets that lend to our rich biodiversity.

With a tagline “Colour Me Trinbago”, Patriotism Month acknowledges the colours of our national flag and calls for citizens to integrate the meaning of each colour in our daily lives: Red represents the vitality of the land and our people, as well as our courage and friendliness; White represents the purity of our aspirations and the equality of all; and Black represents the dedication of our people joined together by one strong bond. For 2018, the Arima, Port of Spain and San Fernando, City and Borough Corporations as well as sponsors Pearl and Dean and TSTT have joined in this partners for “Colour Me Trinbago”.

To bring these meanings to life, the “Colour Me Trinbago” Art Competition invites our nation’s young children to use the medium of art to tell their patriotic story. The competition, which was launched on Friday August 24th 2018, allows children ages 4 to 12 years to design artistic pieces using the media of crayons, paint, and colouring pencils. Given our partnership with The Solid Waste Management Company Limited, (SWMCOL) we have included a special environmental category for children ages 7 to 12 years to create a piece depicting environmentally responsible practices, or, use recyclable items to create a patriotic-themed work of art. The winners in these categories get $500.00 cash each courtesy SWMCOL.

The competition runs until September 28th, 2018, and prizes will be presented to the winners in each age group 4-6 years, 7-9 years and 10-12 years, with the special prize for the environmental category, open to children ages 7-12 years. The winners along with other selected submissions will be mounted as an exhibition at the National Museum and Art Gallery, and the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts later this year.
