TIME TO BE CRE8TIVE: MCDCA CELEBRATES CRAFT MONTH
“There is nothing more satisfying than creating something with your own hands. “Using your hands is fulfilling on so many different levels”. These were the sentiments shared by Jacqueline Snaggs-Charles one of our local artisans who creates jewellery and paper craft including greeting cards and invitations.
Internationally, March is designated as a month to celebrate craft; to learn new crafts, find a new favourite hobby or revisit a hobby you used to love but no longer took the time to do. It was first celebrated in 1994 by the Craft and Hobby Association, whose intention was to help persons rediscover the joy of crafting.
Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts said that “this month affords us the opportunity to celebrate with our local artisans and recognize their work, skills, creativity and talent”. The Minister also said that, “it is also an opportunity for citizens to join in the celebrations and support our artisans, who continue to make their mark in the handicraft industry. It is a time more so now than ever to buy local.”
During the month of March, the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts will feature some of our local artisans on Instagram and its Facebook page.
They will share their experiences and some insight into preparation of their craft.
