MSCD formally commences its “SHAPE (Sport, Health, Athletic Performance and Empowerment) in Communities” Programme

The Ministry of Sport and Community Development is on an active mission to ‘shape’ resilient and sustainable communities across Trinidad and Tobago. On Tuesday 25th May, the Ministry formally commenced the capacity building component of its community sport project, “SHAPE (Sport, Health, Athletic Performance and Empowerment) in Communities.” The first course, Introduction to Coaching, commenced on May 26 with the objective of instructing new and/or uncertified coaches on the fundamental aspects of Sport Development and general coaching principles. The second course titled “Sport Administration,” commences today and both courses are being administered in conjunction with the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC).

During the formal introduction to the course, the Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe addressed over 70 enthusiastic participants, speaking of the merger between the former Ministries of Sport and Community Development –“This marriage is part of a vision to utilize sport to transform lives of those in the community… we must unleash and maximize the full potential of sport to develop our people and expand our economy.”  Minister Cudjoe also added that the Ministry intends to “deepen our ties with the sporting fraternity and equip stakeholders with the necessary technical knowledge and exposure to networks, all towards facilitating growth and development of your respective communities.” Minister Cudjoe further acknowledged the work of community sporting groups, coaches and administrators– “You have been out there over the years, toiling. This is indeed a labour of love. You continue to work passionately and diligently, and this is our way of reaching out to offer some much- needed guidance and support.”

TTOC’s President Mr. Brian Lewis also endorsed this project, stating that “emphasis on community (during this time) is displaying hope.”

The SHAPE in Communities Programme is a multi-component initiative encompassing capacity building courses, a celebration of community sporting leaders through the “Community Titan” campaign, an Athlete Welfare Workshop, and a Registration Drive for all community sporting groups across Trinidad and Tobago. The project will be executed during the months of May to August 2021.

Registration for both capacity building courses ends this Friday, May 28th, and interested persons can visit the following link to access registration forms:
