MCDCA HIV Unit reaches out to teenage mothers

The HIV/AIDS Unit of the Ministry of Community Development hosted an intervention on Friday April 28, 2017 to students of the Choices Adolescent Mothers programme in La Horquetta, Arima.

An introduction was done by HIV/AIDS co-ordinator, Keitha Kennedy, who outlined what HIV/AIDS is; the modes of transmission and ways of protecting yourself against the disease and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STDs.

A person living with HIV/AIDS was a guest speaker and shared her experiences as a young mother who also got pregnant in her teenage years.  She spoke passionately about her experiences.

The group of young girls was very open and shared willingly with the speaker. They also asked questions and were receptive to the information being divulged.

After the testimonial, the girls were asked about one thing that they learnt from the session. They were able to answer eagerly and positively.

The session ended with a vote of thanks done by one of the students to Ms Kennedy and her team, and a request was made for this session to be an ongoing activity at the institution.

The Choices program is designed to assist teenage mothers in their daily functions within society.
