La Fillette Community Welcome Refurbished Community Centre

Located between Las Cuevas and Blanchisseuse, La Fillette is a beautiful village nestled between these two communities on the north coast.  On Tuesday 27th, February the village of La Fillette was buzzing with excitement as members of the community came out in their numbers to the re-dedication of the La Fillette Community Centre and showed their appreciation through music and drama.

The air was filled with sweet steelpan music, as students of the Blanchisseuse Secondary School, Issica Matthews and Makiya Garica, played their tune of choice, ‘Hello’ (sang by soca artiste Kes) as they welcomed persons to the re-dedication which also set the tone for the festivity and excitement.

Tasha Jack, National Calypso Queen Finalist 2018, belted out her calypso rendition as she displayed the cultural talent of La Fillette, while Nikeisha Felix-Lewis presented a dramatic piece on how the La Fillette Community Centre should be put to use.   Guests were also entertained by the North Coast Pan Serenaders.  Five residents were recognized for their contributions to the La Fillette community in the areas of cultural, educational and community service.

The re-dedication of the Community Centre forms part of the Ministry’s mandate to provide communities with a “hub” to meet, learn and exchange ideas.  During her address, Dr. the Honourable, Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts reminded the community that the centre is more than the building and challenged them to use the space to Inspire, Empower and Create.

Dr. Gadsby-Dolly noted that, “Our vision is building resilient, culturally rich communities and it is not just something we say but it’s something we thrive for every day.” She also said that, “On days like these when we provide these structures to a community, it is a high day for the Ministry of Community, Culture and the Arts, as we fulfilled our mandate.” Over the next four (4) weeks, the Ministry will be re-dedicating four community centres:

  • Todd’s Road Community Centre
  • Arouca Community Centre
  • New Village Community Centre (Point Fortin)
  • Pleasantville Community Centre
