Hi, I am Britney Pacheco-Carrera "Green Thumb" and I am competing in the Small Kitchen Garden category. The size of my garden is 9ft by 2ft giving me a total of 18 sq.ft. I am hoping to qualify for (4) four of the special categories as well; Most Innovative, Most Sustainable, Best Influencer and Most Decorative Kitchen Garden. I used a variety of objects such as the ground/dirt yard, grow box/raised bed, concrete pots, plastic pots, plastic containers, tyres, pvc, tin and concrete blocks to plant my seedlings. To prepare the soil for planting I mixed cured chicken manure, pro mix, sharp sand, tree manure and top soil.
The seedlings I planted are 12 Patchoi, 12 Lettuce, 14 Celery, 18 Chive, 5 Cucumbers, 4 Ochroes and 3 Melongene. These were all planted between the 19th - 26th April, 2022. Some of the measures that I took to adhere to health and safety practices included; wearing of proper gardening attire (boots, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, broad-brimmed hat), used of proper tools (hand shovel, hoe, watering can), equipment were cleaned stored properly after use. I used 10:55:10 fertilizer after transplanting my seedlings. This was applied by mixing in a bucket, wearing rubber gloves and using a small plastic cup to apply. The remaining fertilizer was tired in a plastic bag and stored in a dry cabinet.
At this stage my drip irrigation system was completed through the use of plastic bottles, lace and swab sticks.
To deter pest and beautify my garden I planted (2) two herbs; Tarragon and Basil, 2 Petunias flowers and 2 marigolds. I used composted chicken maure and onion/garlic water as fertilizers for my plants. The garlic and onion water, soap water and beer were also used to deter pest and insects and to prevent some diseases from spreading. Dry grass from my nearby compost heap was used as mulch for my plants. I made my signs from clay and paint which I moulded in the same of each crop and painted to beautify my garden.
At this stage I proudly harvested some of my short term and long term crops (Lettuce, Celery, Chive, Cucumbers and Patchoi - 29th May). Most of what I planted will be given to family and neighbors. I will definitely be using what I harvested in my kitchen as well and may even sell some lettuce and patchoi.
My crop record sheets are up to date and would be posted in my last video.
