Description: The students of HCGF entered the Large Category of the GIY Challenge 2022. We utilize one of our previously constructed grow beds that totals (100sq feet). The soil used, consisted of Garden top soil, Chicken and Cow manure all mixed with Limestone to assist with balancing the soil acidity.
Short-term crops planted were Lettuce and Pakchoi.
Long-term crops planted were Cucumber and Bodi.
Unfortunately, due to the heated weather condition and no water supply by WASA for two weeks (May 8th though May 21th) both our short and long term crops were affected and many of the crops died.
As our mission states "I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me" Philippians 4:13KJV.
Despite our loss, with persistent the team on May 26th replanted both short and long term crops.
Before planting, Epson salt was added to the soil in each of the planting holes. Epsom salt is made up of hydrated magnesium sulfate (magnesium and sulfur), which is important to healthy plant growth.
Because our crops are for our home use and some of our parents are currently undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy we do not use many fertilizers or pesticides as many farmers.
Fertilizer, if needed will be Calcium Nitrate a few grains around the root of the crops (3") besides what's was previously mentioned above. Currently, we have not observed any Insects or Disease as of May 29th but if we do, Bioneem oil will be applied at the rate of 2 teaspoon per gallon of water.
