“GirlsRunTT” Challenge for #IWD2021

The #GirlsRunTT Challenge is a key feature of the Ministry’s recently restructured Pink Reign Campaign which seeks to encourage more women and girls to be physically active and increase their involvement and participation in sport. In recognition of International Women’s Day 2021 (#IWD2021), the Ministry of Sport and Community Development (MSCD) will enroll and sponsor 120 women and girls to participate in a number of virtual road races covering 70 miles between  the months of March and August 2021.

The MSCD is working with BafaSports Limited on this #GirlsRunTT initiative which takes its pattern from the BafaSports’ Magnificent 70 mile Challenge. This Challenge takes participants on a virtual journey celebrating the seven historic buildings located around the Queen’s Park Savannah in Trinidad and Tobago. The virtual race is intended to challenge women of various fitness levels to participate in 5k, 10k, half marathon and other races to improve their physical health and inspire other women to keep moving as we grapple to overcome the current pandemic.  The Ministry of Sport and Community Development is also promoting this initiative to pay tribute to the late ‘Granny’ Luces, one of T&T’s most beloved road runners.

The Pink Reign Campaign also includes a series of monthly panel discussions ranging from the need for a cultural shift as it relates to women in sports, to sport entrepreneurship, diet and exercise. The project will highlight and celebrate women in sport as well as provide virtual training clinics and workshops.

The #GirlsRunTT Challenge kicks off the MSCD Pink Reign Campaign for 2021 and issues a call to all women and girls across Trinidad and Tobago to join the campaign to get physically active and participate in sports.  Interested participants can visit mscd.gov.tt or the MSCD social media pages to register from 9 – 16 March, 2021 at 4:00pm. Applicants will also be asked to state in 25 words or less what they #choosetochallenge in recognition of International Women’s Day 2021. The MSCD will announce selected participants by 30th March, 2021 via its social media pages.
