Greetings on the occasion of International Women’s Day from Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts Copy

Thursday 8th March 2018

The people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago are on the cusp of witnessing this country’s installation of its first woman President. Having a female Head of State is a milestone yet to be achieved by many nations of the world, but our young Republic of only forty-two years has seen women ascend to almost every leadership role in our society.

#PressforProgress, the theme for this year’s commemoration of International Women’s Day, calls for gender parity; a concept that has long been entrenched our educational, cultural, social and political landscapes. As the Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, I remain inspired by the women of Trinidad and Tobago who show leadership in our village councils, performing spaces and wider cultural sector; balancing work, family and creative commitments.

To all women involved in our creative sphere we celebrate your efforts. We also remember those women who left a legacy for us to follow – the list is endless.

Let’s continue to live, imagine and create beyond gender barriers. May the legacies of all women in the arts continue to inspire our young minds to become the best version of themselves as we make our beloved twin-island nation a place of possibility for all our citizens.

Happy International Women’s Day!
