Community Centre Forums get underway in St. George West

“Community Centres must become a hub of activity again” this was the sentiment of Mrs Susan Corbett, Director of the Community Development Division, as she gave her opening remarks at the start of the Community Centre Forum held at the Barataria Community Centre on May 2nd, 2017.

This marked the first of seven upcoming forums on the topic of community centres in Trinidad and Tobago, which is geared toward gathering information from all stakeholders on the use, upkeep, maintenance and construction of community centers. Mrs. Corbett noted that this exercise was held to ensure that the Ministry was on the right track, and that those present would have the opportunity to put their best ideas forward and become a part of the solution.

Participants of the forum included various members of village councils, community groups and other stakeholders who were involved in the community. Attendees were invited to discuss various areas including; the management of the centres, its physical structure, access to the facilities, rental fees and most importantly the role of the Community Development Division in working with communities.

The discussions were a passionate exchange of information where various challenges and solutions were highlighted. Many persons expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to voice their concerns and to make a meaningful contribution to the work of the division of which they are an integral part.
